SMFR General Discussion Posting Guidelines

BEFORE POSTING, READ THESE GUIDELINES:

1.) DO NOT POST SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW CHARACTERS. The roster of Mario and Peach are set in stone until the game is completed.

2.) NO LEVEL SUGGESTIONS TOPICS. We are currently not taking any level suggestions. However, you are free to make levels to your liking with the provided public S.A.U.C.E. You can even contribute levels to the game itself if you follow our guidelines and the level fits nicely in an empty slot.

3.) The only gimmick we will feature prominently in Super Mario Fusion Revival are vehicles/mounts. We will not add any more gimmicks, like the commonly suggested Yoshi Egg abilities and a wall jump for Mario.

4. DO NOT POST BUG REPORTS HERE. The SMFR Bug Tracker is where all bug reports and issues should be posted, except for S.A.U.C.E. bugs at this time.

Any post that contains any of these things will be binned on sight.

Question about special-jump
« on: December 18, 2011, 07:50:40 pm »
Hi, just a quick question that struck me while playing through these outstanding levels. Why is the special jump (here, Mario's spin jump) set as jump-plus-up rather than a special button assigned to it as in Mario World (and, there is a special button for dismounting, so it seems to me to make sense to have the special jump be that same button). Perhaps this has been answered before or I am missing some clear reason, but it seems to me better to have it as a special button, since there are times where e.g. during a high-stress running jump scenario that I will accidentally do the spin jump, e.g. by going slightly diagonally up-right rather than pure right on the control pad.

Because we do not want to have too many action buttons in the game. There are already four:
*Run/shoot button
*Jump button
*Dismount button
*Mount special attack button (Metal Slug tank cannon)

For people who use gamepads, having more than 4 buttons will be cumbersome to them.

Wait, couldn't the dismount button double as the spinjump button? I seem to recall that being the setup in Super Mario World.

I'm inclined to agree here.  Having a button just for dismounting seems odd, and since you can't spin jump on/in a mount anyway, there shouldn't be any button conflict.  (And yes, it was like that in Super Mario World.)
Up + Jump could be left as an alternate special jump though, for people used to MKF.

My argument against having the up-plus-jump available as an alternate would be that, unless there is the option to disable that alternate command, there is the issue of accidental spin-jump activations (as I bring up in the original post). But I agree with you and others here, that (as I note in the original post) having the dismount button also function as the special-jump button seems to make more practical sense both in its own right and with the added bonus that it aligns with how SMW does it.

I know that I'm the one who usually harps about control conflict, but in my experience, using Up and Down on the D-Pad is usually pretty safe, especially in a 2D game without a strong combat emphasis like this one.  However, if it really has happened to you, then maybe you're right.

I originally interpreted the TC's original post as suggesting we add a new separate key/button for the special jump, so my first response addressed it in that manner. I think I had misinterpreted the actual intention haha.

Making the special jump button share the dismount button is the logical solution. We should have thought of that long ago.

In Hello Engine 4, dismounting was originally also UP+JUMP, and we moved the dismount to a separate key. The special jump key will be mapped to the dismount key.

Look for this change in v0.4.

Sounds good, thanks, though you might want to also provide the option of enabling the jump-plus-up command, to satisfy those used to it-- but as suggested above only make it optional, to satisfy those like me who have accidental spin jump activation problems (might be the way to anticipate/minimize future complaints from both directions; best of both worlds kind of solution)
