MKF General Discussion Posting Guidelines

1.) READ THE FAQ BEFORE POSTING. If you have a question about MKF in general, chances are it is answered in the FAQ.

2.) DO NOT POST SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW CHARACTERS. MKF already has so many characters planned, plus a whole lot more that are unfinished.

3.) DO NOT POST SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW ENEMIES. As of July 2010, the MKF Dev team is focused on getting the game done, not adding any more unnecessary extra enemies.

4.) DO NOT POST SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW GAME FEATURES. THIS INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO: POWER-UPS, SUITS, LEVELS, AND GAME MODES. As noted above, the team is focused on getting the game done.

5.) DO NOT POST BUG REPORTS HERE. The MKF Bug Tracker is the place to do so.

6.)DO NOT ASK ABOUT RELEASE DATES FOR THE NEXT VERSION. We do not give out release dates. Why? If we announce a date and we miss it, people will get disappointed. New versions will be released as they get done.

Any post that contains any of these things will be binned on sight.

Something about The Library
« on: April 16, 2012, 02:32:35 am »
Hey there guys.

I didn't create or start a new thread about MKf for a long time now. But I think after the newest videos on MKFusionTeam I wnt to talk with you about some sort of suggestion.
Do not misunderstand me, this is not meant to be negative criticism, just something constructive, that might even add to the quality.

So we all watched the videos on MkFusionTeam's youtube channel: new levels were added, as were new characters.
Some of these newer levels are world boss levels (yeah this games is naring completion more and more so it is logical that some peope work on these levels as well).
And believe me: They are awesome; they are just like the castles in a Super Mario game: they are the climax, the highlight of their respective world.
We all played Hell Promincence in the newest beta: It is a long and epic stage filled with all kind of Mario enemies and traps. Plus it introduces a very unique gimmick: the Koopa bomb ship. What an original and awesome idea that was.
Beside this level we saw several vids introducing new world boss levels, i.e Lab of the Fusionist for World 5, Heart of Darkness for World 4 and Wily Citadel 4 for World 3.
As you might tell all of these levels are as epic as said Hell Prominence. Each of them providing their own challenges and their very own original ideas, may it be the clever usage of completely unique enemies (Lab of Fusionist), a marathon fight against 8 Robot Masters (Wily's Citadel 4) or a large, demon infested stronghold with elevator sections and tricky platforming (heart of Darkness).
Thinking about other world boss levels that are yet in development or need to be picked up by a dev I am certain that these will be as epic as the previously mentioned stages.

However there is one stage that I personally think (and again, it is my very own oppinion based on my experience as I played through 0.5 and tested some of the above mentioned levels) that one of these levels is not on part with the rest of WB levels: You might have guessed it, it is The Library - 9-WB.
And to be honest it is not anyone's fault. Thus I do not want to blame anyone for this. I guess it is due to the fact that in over these years the quality of levels has become better and better, a normal process, that can be regarded in many different games.
Basically The Library is a stage where you follow a flying device/ drone in a mainly autoscrolling level while fighting off Flood. It is a classic level, one of the very first stages that have been made for MKf back in the days, when the project was young. And even today I think that it is a nice level with good design decisions.
But to be honest it is not on-part with both the rest of the newer levels in world 9 (Zebes, Wart's Nightmare etc) and the other world boss levels.

Thus I ask you dear viewers and readers: Do you feel the same? Do you think this level might need an overhaul to somewhat match the quality of newer levels (esp due to its important status as a WB stage)?
Again this is not criticism and should not end in an argue. Let us discuss it neutral and professional. :)
Thanks!

I think it's already planned for an overhaul, actually.

Oh it is? O_o

EDIT: Okay, that post above was a bit short, so I guess I should elaborate a bit. So if it is true that it will get an overhaul, does that mean that you devs will put in more enemies like the Zerg or the Contra enemies from Alien's Lair? Also will you create new rooms that will replace one or another room of the previous version, rooms that will not involve autoscrolling whatsoever?

I remember reading in another topic that this one has a planned overhaul.
I enjoy putting myself in exotic and awesome environments, then I make people play fan generated games they never knew existed.

In 2008, The Library was to be the most difficult and most lengthy level in MKF. It was to be the only level in the whole game that had the dreaded "RUN" section.  Back then, it was still mostly a Mario-styled game. Four years later, MKF has changed so much the The Library seems unspectacular in comparison to newer levels like Superfat World. The Library is a victim of MKF changing so much since The Library's creation 4 years ago.

Indeed, this level was made when only Mario was playable, and that flight section required you to use his raccoon tail; due to MKF's current nature, it will need an overhaul while retaining the level's own old nature and purposes. It's too early to know what will we do with it, we could use one of the ships (like VicViper) for the flight section instead and overhaul it, or reuse enemies all around from W9 editing the design for their fair placement among other things, but yeah it'll be eventually edited.

This has happened to older levels as well, look at Tower of Babel or Storm Canyon now, they were also made for Mario only requiring him to use certain power ups, the levels still have the same old designs but were adapted to match with the later features, this isn't a bad thing though, they're a lot more fun now.

This stage still stands on its own as a good stage, bar the flight section. We will do our best to preserve it.

Fortress of Traps is another good example of a level that went through an overhaul; gaining a more chaotic fusion aesthetic and Castlevania enemies; yet retained its design.

Fortress of Traps is another good example of a level that went through an overhaul; gaining a more chaotic fusion aesthetic and Castlevania enemies; yet retained its design.

That was done so to level could better match the area it was in. The "No Man's Land" area of World 1 is supposed to be where Legion's fusion of realities is "breaking through" into the Mushroom Kingdom, but this was portrayed mostly in the secret levels. So some of the levels were given a Fusion makeover so they'd better illustrate that. Storm Canyon became sort of a Mario/Rayman/Metroid fusion, Foul Fungi got a few Metroid elements, and Fortress of Traps became a Mario/Castlevania fusion. I plan on going back and making a few more modifications to Foul Fungi, the second half of Storm Canyon, and Isle of Mystery to add a bit more Fusion elements, but without changing their basic underlying design.

Go forth, and read from the Book of Gord. Bask in the wisdom and glory that is The Gord.

I played several times this level, and I shall say, for being one of the first levels ever made for MKF, it is really good. I would dare to say that it is a bit better than some of the newest, like Battle For Sera, which I dont know if it was redone or something for 0.5, but for the time being im refering to the Battle For Sera from 0.4.x.

But, it would be awesome if The Library gets to be even better than it is right now.

Eh, personally have similar thoughts about it... would like to see a different stage for the WB of world 9

Plus, although the library for MKF consists of a very good stage, the library for the actual game Halo 1 always kind of consisted of the most bland and drawn out level... the name, images, and sounds of that level just kind of bring up a lot of tedium-pain... atleast for us.

Why not make the library... say, level 7?

I'm sorry but I also share the same opinion, I think the Library doesn't fit so much as a "Boss level" it feels more like a regular level that's almost the end of World 9. But it's still an awesome level, just kind of unfitting as a WB in my opinion.

Btw I noticed something, in one of the first rooms there's an info box that introduces the Shotgun as if it was the first time you ever see one in the game, even though you already see many of them in World 2 for example. I know it's nothing big and it's because this was one of the first levels in the early version, but I just wanted to point that out :P
